Other species include: hard fern, maidenhair spleenwort, bramble, wild strawberry, wood sorrel and black bryony.
Verdant is a Triptych of images that are the result of several visits over the summer months to U.K. woodland valleys including Dewerstone Woods in South Dartmoor and The Lledr Valley in North Wales where wild, boulder-strewn rivers create a lush, mossy world under the shaded canopy of oak, birch and rowan.
Individual plants were photographed in-situ, without picking, using a makeshift outdoor ‘studio’ in order to isolate them and achieve consistent lighting. These plants were then painstakingly cut out and arranged to form collections that echo Victorian botanical specimen illustrations.
Whilst each image feels curated and carefully balanced, a sense of the wild is nevertheless retained within the compositions so that the viewer’s imagination is lead into a deep green cleft where moss and lichen coat the tree trunks and water slowly drips from the ferns that root themselves in the steep, rocky walls.
